The Refuge Port of Gela is a historic facility located in the southern part of Sicily, which has played a fundamental role in the commerce and maritime defense of the city of Gela since ancient times. The city of Gela, founded in the 7th century BC by the Greeks, has always had a close connection with the sea, thanks to its strategic location along the southern coast of the island.

Over the centuries, the port underwent numerous changes and expansions, especially during the Roman period, when it was transformed into an important commercial and naval hub. During the Middle Ages, the city and its port were involved in various conflicts and invasions, but the port continued to be a safe refuge for ships.

In the 20th century, with the industrial development of Sicily and the introduction of new technologies, the port of Gela went through a major modernization phase. In particular, the port area was equipped with modern infrastructure for commercial and industrial traffic, thanks to its proximity to the Gela petrochemical complex, which made the area a key hub for the transportation of raw materials and finished products.
